Introducing the South African Seashore: Part 1, Tides and the Physical Environment provides an introduction to the causes and effects of tides as backround to understanding the physical environment of the plants and animals which inhabit rocky shores. It was prepared specifically for use in teacher training programmes at colleges, but should also be useful for senior secondary scholars, university undergraduates and even the interested layman. The programme was designed to provide essential background for the use of the seashore to teach the ecology syllabus (1990) of the teacher training colleges in the southwestern Cape. The programme begins by explaining the causes of tides, and follows with an examination of the conditions created by tides at different levels of the seashore. An understanding of these concepts is essential to understanding the ecology of plants and animals living on rocky shores.

This resource was developed initially as a slide-tape package for use by the Environmental Education Resource Unit of the University of the Western Cape. It was converted to HTML format by D.W. Keats as an experiment to demonstrate the power of the WWW as an educational tool. The resource is divided into a number of frames, which are linked with one another, or which can be accessed individually from the links above. I hope you enjoy and learn from this resource.
