Introducion to the South African Seashore: Part 1

As the earth/moon system spins about its common axis of rotation, a centrifugal force is set up in the direction opposite to that of the gravitational pull of the moon. This force throws out a bulge of water, or a high tide, on the side of the earth facing away from the moon.
