Introduction

This on-line resource was adapted from a booklet of the Sea Fisheries Communications Department, a branch of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism. It is a guide to a wide range of career opportunities that are available to people who wish to work in South Africa's marine environment. The original booklet also features the stories and experiences of real marine professionals so as to provide insight into the challenges and excitement awaiting new recruits. For copies of the more detailed booklet, please write to:

Most educational institutions in South Africa may offer bursaries and loans to deserving students who wish to study towards a marine-related career. Sea fisheries will assist with the few bursaries and scholarship that they are able to raise from the private sector, their clients and foreign donors.

We are committed  to opening our doors to the young people of this country who were previously denied the opportunity of exploring a career in the field of fisheries management, including marine research, marine conservation, fisheries management and administration, marine law, marine economics, environmental communications and so on.
Monde Mayekiso, Chief Director: Sea Fisheries, 1998.
