Some of the projects that EnviroEds has undertaken include:

1. Writing projects:

a) Land degradation in South Africa

This is a popular version of a report on land degradation produced in 1999 by the National Botanical Institute and the Programme for Land and Agrarian Studies. This book is currently in production, and should be available by September 2000. For further information on the NBI's desertification programme, see their website (www.nbi.ac.za/landdeg)

b) The history of the Environmental Education Curriculum Initiative (EECI)

A referenced summary of the development of the Environmental Education Policy and Curriculum Initiatives, 1992-1999. This report provides a brief overview of the EEPI and EECI processes and is a companion to an extensive collection of source documents that will be made available to researchers wishing to investigate aspects of these environmental education processes. The report is currently being edited and the collections of source documents compiled by Dr Heila Lotz of the Gold Fields Environmental Education Service Centre at Rhodes University. For further information please contact H.Lotz@ru.ac.za.

2. Learning Programme and Resource Material development:

a) Exploring assessment

A workshop presented in collaboration with the Wildlife & Environment Society of Southern Africa at the Knysna Elephant Park, March 2000.

b) Plants in our environment

This programme is being developed in collaboration with the Southern Cape Herbarium in George and teachers from the southern Cape. A resource for teachers will be produced during the second half of the year, providing ideas for teachers wishing to develop Foundation Phase learning programmes that focus on plants of the southern Cape.

c) Cape Flats Flora conservation priorities

The Cape Metropolitan Council and Botanical Society of South Africa are conducting a feasibility study to determine whether there is a need for an educational poster and workbook dealing with the indigenous flora of the Cape Flats. A workshop will be held at the University of the Western Cape on 14 June to discuss this. Click here for further details on this workshop. Click here for further details on this workshop.
