International Ocean Institute

The International Ocean Institute (IOI) is an independent, non-governmental, international, nonprofit organization promoting education, training and research on marine environments. The IOI consists of eight operational centres worldwide, of which the local centre is housed at the Botany Department at the University of the Western Cape.

IOI's training programmes aim to deepen the understanding of the ever-increasing importance of the oceans and their resources in world politics and sustainable economic development. It also publishes the Ocean Yearbook and conducts research on such questions as
the reservation of the oceans for peaceful purposes
, the possibilities of establishing an ocean development tax and the potential of ocean mining and the institutional implications of sustainable development in the marine sector.
