of conservation? Joining any of the following
organisations will enable you to do so - but remember
there are several hundred conservation and
environmental organisations. Only a few of the
organisations have been mentioned here. Refer to
"The Green Pages" (see details below) for a
more complete list. And remember, a gift membership
is a meaningful way in which to spread the
conservation message, as well as being an unusual,
interesting and long lasting gift.

SOUTHERN
AFRICAN ORNITHOLOGICAL SOCIETY (SAGS)
The SAGS promotes the enjoyment, understanding and
study of birds in their environment. This includes
encouraging research at all levels, from amateur to
scientific. The Society has over 5 500 members in 40
branches throughout South Africa and Namibia.
Publications for members include Birding in Southern
Africa, a popular magazine and Ostrich, a scientific

THE
BOTANICAL SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN AFRICA
The people of Southern Africa are custodians of
the world's richest floral heritage, and the
Botanical Society aims to win the hearts, minds and
material support of individuals and organisations,
for the conservation, cultivation, study and wise use
of the indigenous flora and vegetation of Southern
Africa. There are approximately 17 000 members in
branches throughout the country.
The main publications are Veld and Flora, a
popular magazine for members and a series of

THE ENDANGERED WILDLIFE TRUST
(EWT)
The EWT is a non-government,
non-profit, citizen organisation dedicated to
preserving the diversity of life on earth. The
mission of the Trust is to protect endangered
species, which it does through a three point
programme of research, conservation action and public
involvement. The Trust works closely with
universities, national and local conservation
authorities and private individuals in achieving its
objectives. There are more than 5 000 individual
supporters, plus 300 corporate supporters. A journal
called Endangered Wildlife is produced quarterly.

THE
WILDLIFE SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN AFRICA (WLS)
The WLS is a private organisation which aims to
promote an awareness of man's dependence on the
environment, and of its economic, aesthetic,
recreation & spiritual value. This includes the
conservation of biotic diversity; the protection of
the environment from pollution; the sustainable use
of natural resources and the recognition of the
interaction of people, resources and the environment.
Publications include African Wildlife (for adults)
and Toktokkie. Both are produced every two months.
The Society also publishes a wide range of
educational resources. The Society has almost 30 000
members in several categories. There are 7 regional
branches and over 80 local centres throughout South

THE
SOUTHERN AFRICAN NATURE FOUNDATION (SANF)
The SANF is a non-government organisation which
promotes the conservation of nature and natural
resources in Southern Africa by raising funds and
working in partnership with other government and
non-government conservation bodies. The SANF is a
member of the WWF - World Wide Fund for Nature, an
international conservation body, and has the giant
panda as its logo, representing the world's
threatened species. Rather than offering public
membership, people are encouraged to become
"supporters" by making donations to the
Foundation's conservation work. The publications of
the SA Nature Foundation include the quarterly
conservation newspaper "Our Living World"
with a circulation of 1,3 million copies and
educational resource material such as "We

THE
SOUTH AFRICAN ASSOCIATION FOR MARINE BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH (SAAMBR)

SAAMBR is concerned with the biology of the plants
and animals found on the coasts and in the oceans
surrounding southern Africa, to help ensure the
survival and sustained use of marine resources.
Publications include the investigational report
series and popular bulletins including the
fish-tagging newsletter, and the ORI poster series.

NATIONAL BOTANICAL INSTITUTE (NBI)
The mission of the NBI is to provide the
facilities, knowledge and expertise necessary to
