New Book

THE PARIS MUSÉUM

The following superb book was published in December 1998:

Non-geniculate Coralline Red Algae and the Paris Muséum: Systematics and Scientific History.

William J. Woelkerling and Denis Lamy

With contributions by Michéle Dumont & Bruno de Reviers

Publications Scientifiques du Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, /A.D.A.C., Paris

This publication is available from Universal Book Services, Dr W.Backhuys,

PO Box 321, NL-2300 AH Leiden The Netherlands

Fax:[31] (71) 517 02 08; e-mail backhuys@euronet.nl

The 767 pages of this book comprise sections on the history of the Paris collections and the scientists concerned with their collection and/or curation, portraits of many of the individuals are included; a section on the recently re-discovered Lamarck specimens; a full list of all the type collections of non-geniculate corallines; and photographs of all the types with their labels.

The book is perhaps unique in algal herbarium tomes, many published by Bill Woelkerling himself, in the inclusion of personal histories. It conveys the atmosphere of a world-famous museum as well as carefully documented information of inestimable value to taxonomists and is written with affection as well as rigorous accuracy. I hope it will soon appear on bookshelves throughout the world.
